How does a soil moisture sensor actually work?

A soil moisture sensor measures the moisture in the soil using two methods: Resistive sensors determine the electrical conductivity between two electrodes, while capacitive sensors detect changes in the electric field. The measured values are output as a percentage or an analog signal.

What soil moisture values should my plants have?

Optimal soil moisture varies between 20 and 80 percent depending on the plant. Succulents prefer dry conditions at 20-40%, while tropical plants need 60-80%. Most houseplants thrive at 40-60% soil moisture.

How deep do I need to insert the sensor into the soil?

Place the soil moisture sensor about 5-10 cm deep in the substrate, near the root area. For larger plants, you can measure up to 15 cm deep. Make sure both electrodes are completely surrounded by soil.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of smart soil moisture sensors for irrigation systems?

Smart sensors enable automatic irrigation and remote monitoring via app, saving water and time. Thanks to Zigbee technology, they are particularly energy-efficient and last a long time on one battery charge – without fixed wiring or WLAN dependency. Disadvantages include higher acquisition costs, the need for a Zigbee gateway, and more complex setup than simple analog models.

How often do I need to calibrate my soil moisture sensor?

Calibration is recommended every 3-6 months or if the readings seem implausible. Test with completely dry and water-saturated substrate. More frequent adjustment is necessary if the location is changed often or with different soil types.

Are there alternatives to electronic soil moisture sensors?

Yes, mechanical moisture meters without batteries, tensiometers for precise scientific measurements, or the classic finger test also work. However, for automatic irrigation, electronic sensors with a 5V connection are the most practical solution.
